The oldest method of aromatherapy is in the form of candle burning. Close to six thousand years ago the ancient Chinese began burning joss sticks (incense) made from aromatic herbs to honor their gods and ancestors. Aromatherapy is a fragrant world of unseen energies.

In aromatherapy flowers, leaves and fruit are used to make the essential oils. Therapeutic properties are derived in concentrated amounts during distillation when the oil is extracted and used to improve health.

You control the amount of scent and coloring that is used when you make your own aromatherapy candles. You can experiment with different oils and find a scent you like. Supplies that you may need include a double boiler, wicks, a pound of Paraffin, crayons, 1/3 pound of Beeswax, the oils and molds (you can purchase some or make your own). A cleaner burning may be achieved by using soy wax along with other healthy benefits for the environment and you such as being all vegetable, lasting 50% longer, non-toxic, 100% biodegradable and you should note that consumers, the green segment, believe this is a better alternative to Parrafin.

One of the ways to keep the wick in place is to wind the excess around something that will lie on top of the mold. Take the beeswax and paraffin together and melt them in a double boiler. Crayon shavings can be added quickly and easily by using a vegetable peeler over the wax. Adding too much of the crayon shavings at a time may result in a crayon smelling candle. When adding your oil use very little so that the subtle fragrance of the aromatherapy will be just perfect. Waiting until the candle has cooled off, trim the wick to inch.

Quite possibly you will find the whole process of making these candles is very relaxing which is the whole point of aromatherapy. Personable and thoughtful, aromatherapy candles make great gifts and since you enjoy making them and they love receiving them everyone benefits.
