Tortola is the largest of the 60 or so islands that make up the British Virgin Islands - but don't let that fact persuade you that it must, therefore, be overcrowded and hectic.

After all, there are less than 22,000 residents of all the islands combined so, even with quite a few uninhabited, that still leaves plenty of free space for everyone.

If you're thinking of a first ever Caribbean vacation, Tortola is a perfect choice - the language is English, the currency the dollar and there's none of the aggressive tourism of some of the other islands.
