With his awe-inspiring swing that sends the ball soaring into the sunset, John Daly has been wowing golf fans for over 20 years, proving that a big belly doesn't have to hold back would-be athletes. While international media drowns the public in anti-fat propaganda, Daly continues to prove them wrong with long drives, championship titles and hilarious quotes that continually shake up the golf world.
Playing golf since the age of four, Daly started his professional golfing career back in 1987 and has since risen to legendary status. At five foot 11 inches tall and 283 pounds, the 42-year-old athlete has a stunning lifetime drive average of 309.4 yards off the tee. Often with a cigarette in one hand and a Diet Coke in the other, Daly is well known for being a man of the people or, better put, just like everyone else. He often drives his own RV to championship tournaments and has dedicated much of his winnings and free-time to charity. He has spent countless hours working with groups like Make-a-Wish Foundation and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Not only is Daly a professional golfer, he is also a song writer and performer who has gained fame on the country circuit and attracted the attention and recognition of famous singers like Willie Nelson and Darius Rucker. In fact, Daly's album entitled "My Life," includes many guest singers like Nelson and Rucker.
Like many who climb to stardom, Daly has also struggled with alcoholism, alleged drug addiction, marital issues and serious gambling problems. These life issues took their toll on Daly's athletic performances over the years, but the man has always managed to come back swinging. As an athlete, he has been hounded by media and the PGA about his weight, but he has refused to shed the pounds. He says he hates working out and he isn't interested. He said he is happy with himself, fat or not and he proves that fat is beautiful with every swing of his driver.
"There are probably some things I could do to keep my flexibility up, but I'd rather smoke, drink Diet Cokes and eat," he said.
