For those who haven't been in a while it's worth remembering that Blackpool remains the most popular seaside resort in Europe. And it's popular in so many different ways with so many different age groups that there has to be a reason for it still to be riding high when so many other British seaside towns have faded into a sad obscurity - it's not like everybody just turns up for the chips.
Forget the sometimes negative publicity of the past few years. Blackpool has worked, and is working, to grow its appeal with the family again. It's why Blackpool Tower and Circus, Blackpool Zoo, Sea Life Centre and the Sandcastle Waterworld are all so popular after facelifts over the past few years. But it's still very much the case that even an attraction as historic and renowned as the magical Blackpool Illuminations serves only as a backdrop to Blackpool's finest tourist attraction: the Pleasure Beach. And if you're looking for an unbeatable family weekend experience, Pleasure Beach Blackpool is still second to none.
For the family. By the family.
Pleasure Beach Blackpool has remained in the same family ownership since it first opened its doors in 1896. Perhaps that's why Blackpool Pleasure beach, unlike any other theme park in the country, has an unrivalled range of rides that caters for toddlers, young children and families. Yes, of course Pleasure Beach has an almost inexhaustible supply of white-knuckle rides for the most fearless visitors - not least the 213 foot climb that launches millions each year onto the Big One, the UK's tallest rollercoaster - but what makes the Pleasure Beach truly impressive, and ideal for a family weekend break, is the number of other rides it crams into its relatively small space that will appeal to just about everyone.
For the very young there's a wealth of options on the Beaver Creek section of the park. Suitable for children two years old and up (coin operated rides are available for the smallest of rugrats) Pleasure Beach Blackpool offers everything from the sedate Ellie's Caterpillar to the really quite scary (even for some adults) Zipper Dipper - a "woody' rollercoaster for kids that offers three great little dips and an excellent introduction into the world of coasters! There's even a child's Log Flume which just goes to show that the Pleasure Beach doesn't believe thrill rides are the sole preserve of the grown-ups.
As the kids get a little older so the scope of the rides increases and they'll be able to delight in the magical Alice in Wonderland (where you can journey into Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass in a Cheshire Cat-shaped car) whilst the whole family will love the oldest ride on Pleasure Beach Blackpool, Hiram Maxim's Flyers, and the classic "funhouse in a boat' of Noah's Ark. Make sure you take the whole family through the magnificent River Caves and Gold Mine too.
Blackpool Pleasure Beach's white-knuckle rides will give any family with kids tall and brave enough to ride them an unforgettable time, but even amongst these there are some rides that children around the height of your average seven year old should still be able to ride and love.
Pleasure Beach's £15m Valhalla is the longest dark ride in the world and will see you journey through the halls of the Norse Gods on a log-flume that takes in rooms of ice, fire and lightening along the way. It's an unforgettable family experience - not least because you'll all leave soaking wet.
Older kids also love The Avalanche, a Cresta Run type bobsled ride that whips down the track at a fearsome speed - but not so fearsome that it prevented this writer's six-year old daughter from riding it three times and still begging for more.
Pleasure Beach Blackpool - your family's next great weekend break is waiting for you...
It's worth noting that there are no age restrictions (bar the fact you have to be over 2 years old to ride any non-coin-operated ride) on any of the rides. Blackpool Pleasure Beach tickets or wristbands allow you to ride any ride provided you're tall enough - which means there are no tricky decisions about the types of Pleasure Beach tickets you need for your family day out. If they're big enough to ride, they're big enough to ride. Aside from height the only deciding factor is how much the nerves can take.
It's also worth noting that Blackpool Pleasure Beach tickets and wristbands frequently offer additional offers on food and merchandise at outlets around the park, not to mention free admission to matinee performances of some of Pleasure Beach's hottest shows such as Forbidden, Eclipse and Hot Ice.
In fact there's so much to cram into a family day out at Pleasure Beach Blackpool that you'll need to come again just to cover what you couldn't fit in first time around.
Better get started, then...
