Online shopping has revolutionized the shopping world. You can buy paying through the Internet at anytime and anywhere. You name it, you can buy it. Well, practically. You can buy clothes, computers, groceries, books, cars, tools, gift certificates, insurance, just to name a few. In most cases the transactions can only be done with credit or debit cards. Believe it or not, there are some sites that offer cash on delivery.

People find shopping online easier, and it saves you money. A majority of businesses often offer discounts. However, there could sometimes be trouble. Let's have a look at choosing a secured and safe site for your shopping. You need to be sure your transactions are safe.

First, the browser you're going to use needs to withstand by the security standards. There are (SSL) Secure Sockets Layer, and (SET) Secure Electronic Transaction. These are systems that encrypt the purchase information you send over. An unbroken key is an indication of a safe site, you'll see a picture of a closed lock or web address that starts with https://. In addition, most browsers display a warning message before you click to send any information to a site. It shouldn't be any problem to verify a secure site with a "certificate". At this point in time, Verisign, Inc, is a provider of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). This company has a long-term partnership with a large number of companies. Check out www.verisign.com for more information.

Avoid revealing any personal information unless they require you to. Try not to send your password if you don't know who the receiver is at the other end. It's more secure to use a combination of numbers, letters or symbols in your password instead of obvious facts like birthdates, or phone numbers, etc.

It's best to always pay with a credit card. Most online shopping is by credit card purchase, in order to make it easy for the customer. Paying by credit card also means it will be protected by the Fair Credit Building Act. The law states, consumers have every right to dispute any charges against certain transactions or situations.

It's always best to buy something low priced the first time you shop online. After you get the feel of it, you can go on to investing on higher priced items. It's a good idea to use only one card for all your online shopping, for your own piece of mind. Always keep a hard copy of the purchase receipt and confirmation numbers.

Most maximum websites may ask you to register in order to shop. Sometimes this form can be very risky, with just one click there goes all your personal information. It could be going anywhere. The sites mainly want to know if you are new to online shopping, or see what types of products may be of interest to you, etc. Sometimes they might ask for your e-mail, password, mailing address, and phone number.

Do question yourself before submitting such information. Is all this required? Can I trust this business? What about the privacy policy? Is this a secure site? Just think about it, and after if you feel right about the website, you can go forward. Even after having some knowledge about this website, if you come across some problems there are agencies which can help.

1. Federal Trade Commission

2. National Fraud Information Center

3. Consumer Information Center

4. The publication Analyzing Internet information

5. Call for Action, Inc.

These are just some of the few. Remember, just follow these little details I have outlined and your experience shopping on the Internet can be very rewarding, it really saves time and money.
