OK so I don't really think Linux web hosting is better than Windows Hosting. I just needed a snappy Title for my article! On to business...
Many newcomers to building websites don't know whether they need Linux hosting or Windows web hosting. To answer your question, you already made your decision based on what you(or something else) programmed your website in. While both hosting platforms can handle your standard HTML/CSS based sites, each operating system has its advantages for certain scripting languages.
Linux is best for:
Linux thrives at serving up PHP,Perl scripts as well as running MySQL databases. If your website uses any of these, you will want to go with a Linux web hosting plan. Linux web servers also tend to run a little bit faster and smoother but that is also dependent on hardware factors as well.
Windows is best for:
Windows is not all useless ;) Windows tends to out perform Linux when serving up pages coded in ASP and ColdFusion. Windows also runs a different Database Server than Linux. Windows runs best using MsSQL which is a Microsoft database server designed only for Windows. Mostly it is personal preference of the coder as to which language he/she decided to make your website with.
While both operating systems can run each others applications, each operating system thrives at running only certain applications. It is better to go with the Linux web host if you need PHP, Perl, and MySQL. If you need ASP, Cold Fusion, MsSQL, pick a Windows web hosting service.
