Learning personal money management skills are basic issues of modern day life for which many of us have never had any formal training. This is a sad commentary on our society because the absence of teaching money management skills has left most people unprepared to deal with one of the most important everyday matters.
We all learned the basic math skills of adding, subtracting, multiplication and division in elementary school. Many of us went on to learn some algebra and possibly geometry, but what about the practical and serious subject of personal money management skills?
Yes, it is true there were some story problems in our math classes that dealt with determining the correct answer to certain financial transactions, etc., but the emphasis on even those problems was only on the techniques of the math problem itself. There was usually no further followup attempt at teaching money management skills.
The truth of the matter is that there are no standard mandatory classes in schools to teach students critical everyday skills of managing household and personal money. This fact really makes no sense since the handling and use of money is one of the most important facets of everyday life. Whether a student goes on to to become a gas station attendant, a baker, a firefighter, a social worker, a doctor, or a company CEO, each person will find that handling and managing money is one of the most important things that they will need to know in order to have a successful adult life.
Failing to learn proper money management skills will lead most people to a life sentence of unnecessary stress and unhappiness, so why don't schools teach students household and personal money management skills?
Just like any other field of interest or natural born skills, there are those who seem to be born with a good sense of money management, and those are the ones, of course, who typically do well in this area even without formal training. But what about the rest of us?
Money management is a sore subject for many people. Most people do not want to admit that their skills are lacking in this area, and are quick to become defensive about personal financial matters. It is well known that money problems are among the biggest reasons for relationship controversies in marriages and domestic partnerships.
People disagree about the management of household and personal money, but each person usually has little to fall back on to defend their position or reasoning other than raw emotions. That is because they have not developed any real personal money management skills. These emotional outbursts and angry confrontations that occur daily over money in so many American homes could be easily prevented in many future situations if only the important skills of learning money management were to become part of the standard school curriculum.
