For anybody taking notes this year looks to be the watershed for two trends... Digital TV and ecommerce.

With many countries going into, or being halfway through the transitional stage online electronics resellers are going to have a fantastic opportunity get in on the ground floor of the digital TV revolution this year.

They are just going to need to do their homework before they start stocking products and educate their customers on what to look for.

The DTV process started in 2003 and the first wave of countries converted is expected to finish the process between 2012 and 2013.

As a result many consumers from many countries will be considering replacing, or replacing much of their television capable gadgets so that they are DTV compliant while you read this article.

According to UK research group Ofcom 88.2% of UK residents had got themselves a Digital television capable set or set top box by the end of September 2008.

Google search volumes for DVB-T and ATSC capable car DVD players and cell phones have all increasing a great deal over the last couple of months.

While name brand electronics companies have been slow to supply digital electronics OEM and wholesale manufacturers have not been as lax.

So what issues are you likely to face?

Your biggest problems are likely to be ensuring that the customer knows enough about the item to buy it safely and being suitably informed yourself on the digital TV standards used in each country.

The biggest battle you are likely to face is ensuring that your customers buy DTV devices using the right standard for their country.

Most of the world have gone, or will go, down the DVB route with North America, parts of Asia and certain US colonies using ATSC.

With the US going through the shift from analog to digital television this year they will be a major market but need to be educated about the differences of ATSC and DVB.

A smaller issue for people selling DTV products to only DVB countries is the differences between the MPEG codecs with some countries going down the MPEG-2 route and some opting for the higher resolution MPEG-4 codec.

As retailers you are going to need to make descriptions detailed and make sure buyers are aware that something might not work for their country.

However, it doesn't matter if you are dropshipping or buying in bulk from a wholesale supplier, providing you make your customers aware of the dangers you will find digital TV gadgets to be an excellent new area to explore.
