Most hair loss sufferers seek solutions from Western medicine or turn to remedies derived from local traditions. Some experts however argue that the ayurvedic system of medicine has much to offer in dealing with hair loss conditions.

The desire to avoid hair loss is not confined to our time. In ancient Egypt, men used to rub fat from crocodiles, snakes, lions, and other animals on their head in hopes of preventing or treating hair loss. Julius Caesar and Napoleon also experienced hair loss and tried to conceal it by growing their hair long in the back and combing it forward over their heads. Today, this motivation to avoid balding is still evident.

One of the most effective hair loss treatment options involves safe, natural ways to stop the loss of hair as well as promote new hair growth, without the potential adverse reactions of prescription medications.

There are a number of natural vitamins, minerals, herbal extracts and other powerful nutrients that have been shown to be quite effective in the war against baldness.

Ayurveda is the traditional system of medicine practiced in India and Sri Lanka. It is a complete approach to health care designed to promote a way of life rather than an occasional treatment. As a holistic system of medicine ayurveda focuses on our uniqueness and takes into account our mental attitude, lifestyle and spirit which should not be treated in isolation from each other.

According to ayurveda, the following principles are beneficial to healthy and plentiful hair:

1) The scalp must be kept cool, so protection from sun and washing in cold or lukewarm water are paramount.

2) Sound nutrition is key, so a hair-friendly diet should emphasize proteins, iron, zinc, sulfur, Vitamin C, Vitamin B-Complex and essential fatty acids.

3) Use should be made of hair analysis to ascertain toxicity levels and nutritional deficiencies.

4) Oils, for example sesame and coconut, should be applied to the scalp to nourish, lubricate and strengthen the roots. This will also improve circulation to the head.

Here are some recipes that will act on the scalp by tightening it and helping to avoid hair loss and promote hair growth.

1) Apply 2 tablespoons of warm olive oil to scalp, leave on for 10-30 minutes before washing hair.

2) Boil 2 cinnamon sticks in one cup of water apply to hair and live on for at least 5 minutes then rinse off.( it will sting a little).

3) Apply & massage vitamin E oil to scalp at least once a week. It's also helpful for dull hair lacking shine.

4) Increase your protein intake by taking multivitamins. Eat high protein foods like meat, chicken, fish, eggs, dried beans, grains etc.

5) Massage your hair with warm Castor and Almond oil once a week.

Eating a well balanced diet is the best way to get healthy hair and prevent hair loss.Foods rich in iodine will also help you improve the ehalth of your hair. Sea salt, spinach, carrots and cabbage all contain iodine as do pine nuts and flax seed oils.
