The term Goiter is used to denote a swelling of the thyroid gland in the neck. It is particularly a disease of the thyroid gland. This disease can also occur without the swelling of the neck.

Goiter is more common in women than men, especially those women who do not get adequate amount of relaxation and rest.
The preliminary symptoms of goiter are usually of short durations and appear as emotional upsets which can pass almost unnoticed. Later a series of other symptoms such as depression, loss of concentration power and weeping may occur along with emotional upset. The patient also gets irritated very easily.
There may also be a swelling of the thyroid gland but it does not predict the severity of the disease as many serious cases also have no visible swelling. This may also be followed by a feeling of extreme tiredness and tremor of hands together with lack of energy to make any muscular effort. In some patients the eyes may also incline to protrude.
Weight loss is one of the most common symptoms of goiter and can persist till the patient feels extremely weak.
The main cause of goiter is the deficiency of iodine in diet and appearance of other emotional and physical disturbances may add up to the problem further. Other causes of goiter include habitual eating of denatured foods that is not cooked and also overeating of refined and processed foods.
Nature Cure for Goiter: The treatment for goiter should commence by thorough cleansing of the system and adoption of rational diet together with adequate relaxation and rest. To begin with juices of fruits such as apple, grapes, pineapple and orange may be taken at an interval of two and a half hours throughout the day for about four days. A lukewarm water enema should be administered daily during this period for cleansing the bowels.
The patient may thereafter switch to a diet of milk and fruits, taking three meals a day of juicy fruits such as apple, papaya and grapes along with a glass of milk at an interval of about five hours.
The patient may gradually embark upon a well balanced diet. In this regimen he should take fresh fruits such as apples, oranges, grapes, pears and grapefruit; a handful of raw nuts and a glass of whole milk during breakfast. Afternoon lunch should include lightly cooked vegetables, whole wheat chapattis and a glass of buttermilk. Vegetable soup, salads of raw vegetables such as tomato, carrot, lettuce, cabbage, celery and turnips; sprouts such as alfalfa seeds and home made cottage cheese and nuts may be taken during night time dinner. A glass of fruit juice or milk may be taken before going to bed at night.
Foods such a s tea, coffee, white flour products, white sugar, fleshy foods, greasy foods, preservatives, condiments and pickles should be totally avoided by the patient suffering from goiter.
The patient should also take adequate amount of rest and spend at least one whole day in bed every week for the first two months of the treatment. It is also necessary to take a proper amount of exercise once the symptoms subside.
Foods rich in iodine should be taken liberally by the patient as they enable faster recovery. These include vegetables such as cabbage, garlic, asparagus, oats, carrot, onions and tomatoes; strawberries, water cress and whole rice.
Along with these measures other water treatments are also beneficial to increase skin elimination. This include application of sponge to the whole body before going to bed and a cold sponge on getting up in the morning is also very helpful. If constipation is habitual all necessary steps should be taken for its eradication.
Moreover the patient should also try to eliminate emotional stress and tension from his day to day life. In the initial stages there may be a light recurrence of symptoms but the attacks will become less severe and of shorter duration as the treatment progresses. And above all the patient should adopt a positive attitude because it is necessary for the treatment to work effectively.
Thus we can say that Goiter can be treated and cured effectively by the application of various natural remedies.
