Bird Watching for Bluebirds - Some Tips

Irrespective of how you discovered the delight of bird watching and why you're interested in looking for bluebirds especially, disregarding bird watching basic principles will get you and your field glasses nowhere. If you want to be able to watch bluebirds as soon as possible, read these tips on bird watching for bluebirds. In a few minutes, you'll graduate from a novice bird watcher to senior bird watcher!

Keep Quiet!

Birds won't come to an area where the noise level is high. If you want to have the pleasure of being able to watch how birds behave in their natural element, you need learn how to keep rustling, rattling and chatter to an absolute minimum. Just imagine the birds as bad-tempered old neighbors, and you'll know what to do.

Do Your Homework

If you're interested in bird watching for bluebirds in particular, you need to make sure that you have researched all the material there is available on the subject of bluebirds. Widening your knowledge of bluebirds will make it easier for you to quickly and easily identify the bluebird from the rest of the crowd.

When researching bluebirds, your study should have the following focal points:

Silhouette - acquaint yourself with the outline of the bluebird.
Plumage or Appearance - attempt to learn the unique physical characteristics of bluebirds. Remember the shape of its head and beak and the color and pattern of its feathers.

Behavior - Check out the behaviour patterns of bluebirds; study what they do when searching for food, protecting themselves from being prey, looking after their young, and when trying to attract a mate.

Call - Learn how to recognise the call of bluebirds amongst the chirping of other avians.

Habitat - Lastly, learn where bluebirds are most likely to live and whether they migrate to warmer climes at certain times of the year.

Equipment and Tools for Bird Watching

To make your search for bluebirds easier, make sure that you have the following ready to hand:

Binoculars - excellent eyesight is unfortunately not sufficiently powerful to enable us to watch birds at long distance. You will almost certainly need bird watching binoculars or a telescope to enable you to see the birds clearly.

Log Book - Don't rely on your memory to recall the whole of your trip in flawless detail. Why take the risk of forgetting something important when you don't have to? You only need to keep an old-fashioned notebook and pencil or pen or a more up-to-date electronic notebook to keep exact and complete records of your sightings.

Food and Water (Yours) - So you won't miss out on anything by having to leave your bird watching post to go and buy provisions.

Food and Water (Theirs) - So you can lure bluebirds closer to you. Be sure that you've researched exactly what food they would normally eat and don't take just any old seed mixture or whatever you would put out in your garden.

Don't be upset if it takes you quite a while to look for for those bluebirds! It will be worth the wait.
