As a company that earns revenue by selling products or services to consumers it is crucial that you accept credit cards to attend to those consumers that do not carry cash. Not only is this good for the consumer it is also good for the retailer or small business as their patronage will go up. A few years ago fast food restaurants started accepting credit cards and this did wonders for their bottom line. There sales shot up astronomically.

To accept credit cards or bank debit cards, you will have to open a merchant account with a credit card processing company. The credit card processing company will charge you a fee for the services it provides to you. The type of payment terminal that the credit card processing company will provide to you depends on the nature of your business. If you run a retail store then you would probably need a credit card machine to process your credit card transactions.

Another type of payment terminal that you could consider is a wireless credit card processing terminal. These are hand held wireless devices that can be used to process credit card payments for mobile businesses. An example of a business that might use a wireless terminal is a food delivery business. They can easily process payment from a customer when they deliver the food to the customer and accept payment right there on the spot by swiping the credit card on their hand held device.

The third type of credit card processing is done by merchants that sell online. It is carried out through a virtual terminal and this involves the use of a shopping cart on the customers' website.

Accepting credit cards at you business encourages your customer to shop. They are not hindered and are not hindered when they do not have any cash at hand. As more and more people shop online today, a retailer that accepts credit cards will definitely increase his customer base beyond those in his locality and is exposed to a very wide customer base. Another positive for accepting payment online is that your store stays open 24 hours a day. It is also cheaper to run since you are not paying an employee to be there physically nor are you paying retirement benefits or medical insurance.
