If you have recently had gastric band surgery or lap band surgery it is extremely important to follow a healthy, well balanced lifestyle and dietary regime to ensure that you benefit fully from the dramatic changes which the surgery will have now invoked upon you.

Even small changes to your diet can really improve your general health and help you maintain your new lifestyle. One of the main things which you can do is to learn to distinguish between healthy foods, and those which are not necessarily considered to be healthy foods. In general terms you have to eat a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, and grains, and most definitely stay away from foods with high calorific content, and high elements of fat.

It is recommended by most Gastric Band Surgeons that people need at least five servings of fruit and vegetables per day. This is not always possible in today's hectic lifestyle, so drinking fruit and vegetable juices along with healthy food can most certainly help. Making an effort and implementing small changes gradually is much easier than attempting to change your entire lifestyle and diet all at once.

Your lap band Surgeon, or dietician will tell you that by getting in to the habit of writing down what you eat and drink on a daily basis can give you a good overall picture of what you do actually consume. In most cases people had not realized what they were consuming before they became Obese and needed Gastric Band surgery. By analyzing what you are eating from these records you will be to help yourself decide which foods you need to eat more of, and conversely, which ones you should cut out completely.

The dietician or gastric band surgeon can advise you on the proper nutrition you need to be your healthiest, and also how to manage a good regime of healthy eating to suit your own particular requirements. Do not be tricked into thinking that newspapers and magazines always have the right information; it has been proved beyond any doubt that many of these reports can at best be very misleading. Do not rely on vitamin supplements either, as these are not as good as the real thing. Plus with vitamin substitutes it can be very tempting to over indulge in them and take vitamins which you may not really need. A natural, well balanced diet will provide all of the vitamins that your body needs. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain many more vitamins and minerals which are absorbed in a more natural manner and therefore are much more beneficial than any vitamin substitutes.

Try changing around what you eat, since variety is the spice of life. The same old foods can get very boring eventually, so look out for new healthy recipes and meal choices to incorporate into your daily menu. It is best to avoid fried foods whenever possible, as these are generally higher in fat and cholesterol than baked or grilled foods, grilling or broiling allows many of the harmful fats to either drain away or be neutralized. Baking or grilling low fat foods is much healthier than frying. Salads are obviously a good healthy diet, but salad dressing is also best to be avoided as that too is very oily and contains high calorific values. Try drinking diet drinks that do not contain sugar, or water and tea, as these are much better for you, and contain virtually no calories.

Maintaining a good Sleep pattern is also very important when you are trying to maintain a new healthy lifestyle. Good quality sleep will give you the energy you need to exercise every day. If you are tired from lack of sleep, your body makes you think that you are hungry, which can then lead to eating more calories than you need to. Sleep will make you feel better all around, and you will find that you have energy to spare to carry out you exercise program.

Your gastric band surgeon will recommend that you begin your exercise program slowly with walking, and then gradually add more exercises as your confidence level rises. Swimming, aerobics, and jogging are also great options. By eating a sensible healthy, balanced diet plan every day, and following a good exercise program regularly, you can be sure that you will be a much happier and healthy person than you were previously.
