Indigestion is one of the most common disorders today and is generally caused by hectic lifestyle and dietary errors. When digestive juices are secreted incorrectly in the stomach it leads to indigestion.

The process of digestion of food takes place in the stomach which is one of the most abused organs of the body. When the stomach is loaded due to overeating of food it prevents the diaphragm from functioning properly and may also exert a pressure on heart.
The common symptoms of indigestion are loss of appetite, abdominal pain, vomiting, a feeling of undue fullness after eating, unusual wind or gas and heartburn. Other symptoms include pain in the upper abdomen, foul breath, coated tongue and bad taste in the mouth.
The main causes of indigestion or dyspepsia are hyperacidity, which results from improper chewing of food and overeating. Overeating makes the work of kidneys, liver, stomach and bowels harder. When this food putrifies, its poisons are absorbed back in the blood, which results in the poisoning of whole system.
Most of the people suffer from stress and eat their food in hurry. As a result of this the stomach has to work harder for its proper digestion. Certain foods like onions, cucumber, radish, beans, cabbage and seafood's if not properly cooked cause indigestion. Fried and spicy foods, excessive smoking and consumption of alcohol may also lead to indigestion. Other causes of indigestion are sleeplessness, drinking water along with meals and lack of exercise.
Nature Cure for Indigestion: The treatment for indigestion should first commence with the thorough cleansing of digestive tract, change in the style of living and adoption of balanced diet. A diet of fresh fresh fruits should be taken for about a week. After this the patient can take a limited diet of foods which are easily digestible such as butter milk, juicy fruits and cooked vegetables for 9-10 days. Thereafter the patient can shift to a well balanced diet.
Fruits are very beneficial for the treatment of indigestion. They flush out the accumulated faeces and undigested food residue and reestablish perfect and normal health. They also perform an important work of cleansing the system thoroughly.
Lemon is considered best for indigestion. Lemon juice attacks the acid forming bacteria in the stomach and dislodges this acid and other substances from the stomach, thereby strengthening and promoting appetite.
For chronic indigestion Orange proves to be a very useful remedy. It supplies nutrition and gives rest to the digestive organs. It improves digestion by stimulating the flow of digestive juices and increases appetite.
Grapes are another useful remedy for dyspepsia. They remove the irritation and indigestion of stomach in a short time, relieve heat and are a good source of glucose, vitamins and proteins.
Pineapple is another valuable fruit. It acts as a tonic and removes the problem of indigestion. Half a glass of pineapple juice taken after meals serves the purpose.
Certain precautions should be taken by patients suffering from indigestion. These precautions are:
Never eat and drink together. Water should not be taken along with meals but one hour before or one hour after meals. Vegetable soups, butter milk and milk can however be taken along with meals.
Eat your food slowly and chew it properly. Never be in a hurry to eat meals.
Do not fill up your stomach totally. Always leave some place. Have the feeling that you can eat more.
Sitting on the table for eating meals with a feeling of anger, bad temper and stress hampers the production of digestive juices including hydrochloride.
Do not eat your food if you are not hungry. You can miss a meal and eat food when there is proper appetite.
Water therapy is also very helpful in the treatment of indigestion. A daily enema should be administered to cleanse the toxic bowel waste. Treatments such as application of ice bags over the stomach half an hour before meals, alternate hot and cold hip baths at night and a daily cold friction bath also prove to be beneficial. Massaging the abdomen is also very helpful.
Yogic asanas such as sarvangasana, pavanmuktasana, ardhmatsyasana, uttanpadasana, yogamudra, bhujangasana, vajrasana and pranayamas such as anuloma-viloma, kapalbhati and ujjai also bring about a relief from indigestion. Physical exercises such as walking, swimming and jogging are also very beneficial.
Thus we can conclude that the problem of indigestion can easily be tackled if we bring about a change in our lifestyle, our eating habits and remain free from stress, tensions and other emotional disturbances.
