Almost everyone is afflicted by headaches at some time or the other in their day to day life. Most of these headaches are caused by temporary upsets. They are functional and do not cause any organic changes in the brain. A headache is usually a natural warning that something is wrong within the body.
The most common causes of headaches are high blood pressure, emotional reasons, eyestrain, allergy, low blood sugar, infection, hangover, tension, nutritional deficiency, the presence of toxins and poisons in the body and migraine. Some people are also allergic to foods which cause and trigger headaches.
Foods such as chocolates, chicken, liver, milk and milk products, strong cheese and alcohol may cause allergic headaches.
Headache is also often caused by intense emotions. Many people who may look happy from outside may actually bear resentment towards a person or something, or may be simmering about a job from within. This hidden enmity may give rise to headache. It is therefore necessary to make a positive outlook and behavior towards life.
Toxins and poisons admitted into the body through water, beverages and food as well as through breathing air full of pollutants can cause many disturbances. A headache gives a first warning signal that a poison has entered the body. Additives added to cosmetics, foods, skin and hair products are also responsible for bringing about headaches. In addition toxic air contaminants also add up to the problem.
Home Remedies for Headaches: There are several types of headaches and each one has its different cause. Taking a pain killer may provide temporary relief, but it does not cure the root cause of the problem. Moreover the frequent usage of drugs brings about various complications, weakens the heart and causes nervous debility.
The first step that a person should take in case of unexpected sudden headaches is to stay on one's own feet in the daytime and do simple tasks which do not require too much concentration or move or walk around and get some fresh air.
One of the most useful remedies for preventing headaches is to build up natural resistance power of the body through exercise, positive thinking and proper nutrition.
The patient can also undertake a short fast. During this fast, a mixture of citrus juice and water can be taken six times a day. This will decrease the load of digestion and the person can save nervous energy which may be utilized for more important processes. The lymph and the blood are also relieved of great burden.
Thereafter the patient can adopt a well balanced diet with more emphasis on fruits, green leafy vegetables, chapattis and sprouts. This will exert the least possible strain on the digestive system. Oily foodstuffs, tomatoes, spices and sour buttermilk should be avoided.
Drinking a glass of water mixed with one teaspoon of honey early in the morning is also a good remedy for headaches.
Water treatments such as cold throat packs, hot foot baths, frequent applications of towels wrung out from hot water to the back of neck, alternate spinal compress and hot fomentations over the abdominal region just before going to bed are very beneficial in relieving the problem of headaches.
Yogic asanas such as sarvangasana, uttanpadasana, halasana, paschimottasana, shavasana, kriyas such as kunjal and jalneti and pranayamas such as anuloma-viloma, shitkari and shitali also prove to be very effective in the treatment of headaches.
Thus it can be concluded that the problem of headaches can be effectively managed by the application and use of various natural home remedies.
