Many people think that allergies only affect the respiratory or digestive systems, but they can also affect your largest organ- your skin. As with other allergies the immune system overreacts to the presence of certain substances and releases inflammation-producing chemicals. Do some research and talk to your doctor. You can be confident of controlling your skin condition better if you are sure you understand what causes it.

Allergy is a condition in which the body tends to react due to hypersensitivity to some substance such as food, drugs, drinks, pollution, flowers, and others. An allergen can be anything under the sun that might cause a reaction in one's body if the body disagrees with that substance.

It is always wise to consult your doctor, but it will help him to help you if, in the early stages, you try this simple but effective preliminary test. Rub a little of the cream, lotion, lipstick, or other preparation which you suspect may be unsuitable for you in a small area just below or slightly behind one ear (in the place most hair stylists normally use to test your reaction to any permanent hair coloring before they go ahead with the first application).

Allergies are defined as immune reactions to different stimuli which result into reactions such as the above. In a nutshell, every time your body experiences an overreaction to something that doesn't affect other people, it's an allergy. The thing that causes the allergy is called an allergen.

I guess what bothered me most about the whole skin treatment process as a child, was that not one doctor asked me what I wanted to do and what kind of treatments I would be comfortable trying. They talked to my mother and ignored me like I was some kind of deaf-mute.

All skin problems are vata dosha disorders. Vata dosha controls the air element of the human body. Hence, when the vata dosha is vitiated, there are skin reactions. In different people, there are different degrees of the vata dosha. In some people, the vata may be weak and get easily vitiated due to external factors. Such people are more specific to skin allergies than others.

Go for an exfoliation once a fortnight either at a professional salon, or at home. It helps remove dead cells and revitalize the skin through blood circulation. Oatmeal combined with mashed apple is an excellent home scrub.

Hydrocortisone is a known steroid medication against skin allergy. Antihistamines also work just as well and are available both in topical (like corticosteroids) and in oral form. People who are allergic to certain types of food usually take in antihistamines before they eat offending foods so that outbreaks don't occur.

Due to the initial exposure, your immune system is now ready to produce large amounts of antibodies next time it is exposed to the same substance. This rapid build up of IgM allows you to recover from the exposure quickly and in some cases without any symptoms of allergy.
