While many people spend many years and lots of money trying to find the perfect golf swing, you have to ask yourself is there such a thing and if so why is it so hard to find?
Yes I do think that the perfect swing is out there but is it something that is worth finding in itself. The reason behind the question is that after many hours on the driving range and the course I have come to realise that there is not one but many perfect swings.
Right, stay with me on this one. Yes, technically you may very well hit the perfect shot, everything comes together just right. Your stance is spot on , your up and down swing are as sweet as a nut, you get that lovely twang as the club hits the ball and it sails as far as the eye can see.
We have all had one or two of those, now think back to the next hole you played. There you are all pleased with yourself and everything feels the same but oops where did that ball go. That's right same shot different result.
How can that be? If you think about it, it is not that hard to see why. Yes technically the shot was the same (perfect) but the one spanner in the works that is always there is you.
Your muscles are just that little bit more tired, the ball was placed a bit higher/lower and not perfectly straight on the tee, the slight breeze has changed direction and speed and of course you mind might not be as focused because you cant get the image of that last shot out of your head, etc. You get my drift.
So what does this mean? I guess it shows, shock/horror, that golf is just like everything else in life. Not Perfect. All the little variables push and pull at your game to send it this or that.
Does that mean that we should stop looking for the perfect swing? Of course not but what it does mean is that we should change our mindset away from the technically perfect swing and refocus on the perfect outcome.
That may mean you don't drive as far as you think you can but that you drive as far as you need to, to place yourself for your next shot. That is what makes it perfect. Not the distance or the power but that you ended up where you intended to be. Don't tell anyone but that may mean that your technique is all wrong and ugly to the purest but hey it worked.
There is a saying in soccer "If it goes in the net it's a goal" meaning it does not matter how it gets there so long as it does.
And ask yourself would you want to keep playing a game where once you had mastered all the techniques the result was the same? To my mind that would be pointless, that's why I love the game, not only am I playing against my fellow players but mostly I am playing against myself.
