One of the easiest ways of controlling your health is by having regular cholesterol testing done. It is a safe and simple procedure that involves very little pain and it is the best way of keeping track of the levels in your blood.

It is likely that you know how badly high cholesterol or LDL, and fats in your blood stream can harm your body. Having high amounts of these substances in your body can lead to tragic results such as developing coronary heart disease or even a stroke.

Although high levels of cholesterol in your blood can cause you a great deal of health concerns, there are good levels called HDL that are actually beneficial. They will be helpful in producing the vitamin D and bile acids that the body needs to survive. In fact, the bile will actually help in breaking down harmful fats in the body.

Methods of cholesterol testing

The best method of deterring high cholesterol levels in the blood stream is to eat right and have regular cholesterol testing done by your physician. It is a simple way of becoming proactive with your health.

The general guidelines recommend that you get tested by your early twenties and continue to be tested every five years after that. Once you reach the age of forty you should be tested at least once every two years.

This test will keep track of such things as triglycerides, HDL, and LDL levels in your blood stream and eliminate your risk of having clogged arteries.

The night before your test you should not eat or drink anything, and refrain from having any alcoholic beverages at least two days prior to testing. Alcohol has a thinning effect on the blood that can interfere with testing.

The main method of cholesterol testing is by drawing a sample of blood from one of your veins. It is non-invasive, fairly quick, and holds a minimal amount of pain.

After the test you can proceed with your daily life until you hear from your doctor. The results will likely be sent on to the physician's office in about two weeks. As long as the test results are below 200 nothing will probably be done, but for results over that special instructions will be given. Depending how high it is you will either have to go on a restricted diet or even begin a daily regime of cholesterol lowering medications.

Having cholesterol testing done at regular intervals will help to eliminate your risks for a variety of health concerns. It is an easy method of ensuring good health in your future.
