A Pedometer is small, weighs about one ounce and comes in different models and color. This health device can help us loose weight as well as at the same time can help us prevent diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension, and also help us improve our general fitness. A pedometer is used to calculates the distance we have walked or run, based on the number of steps we have taken. That's why a pedometer is also known as a stepometer. A Pedometer is by far the easiest way to improve our health condition.
How Does A Pedometer Work?
A basic Pedometer contains a mechanical sensor which calculates the number of steps based on how much our body shakes. The sensor can sense the vibration of our feet hitting the ground or the movement of our body hips, and the software within can add the counter and keep track of the number of steps.
The new models are able to convert our steps into miles or kilometers, count our total calories burnt, or come with an MP3 player etc. Some companies are even now building pedometer into their personal electronic devices e.g. cd player or cell phones.
It is essential that we wear our Pedometer properly in order for it to measure correctly. Always wear it straight and vertical. It should preferably be firmly attached to our belt or anything around our waist. Avoid placing it inside our pocket or bag to avoid inaccuracy.
There is no Pedometer in the market that can be 100% accurate. Even the expensive and reputable models can only be close to the mark.
What to Look for When Buying a Pedometer?
There are variety of Pedometer models available in the market. Some are open face and some are flip-down units. Basic pedometers calculate only steps but the advanced versions can calculate calories burned, time taken, and distance covered, that help us keep track of our progress. Some of the more expensive pedometers will have radios built in them to prevent us from getting bored, some have alarm, lights, etc. Some even have a feature for memory also.
Before choosing the right pedometer it is important to know what kind of program we would be following. The most popular walking program is the 10000 steps a day walking program. For this purpose we need to know our steps and this forms the basis of the count done by the Pedometer.
If we are interested in knowing how much distance we have traveled then buy a pedometer with a distance calculating functionality. Before we start using such a pedometer we need to set our stride length, since all the calculations will be based on this. While walking or running make sure our step size is close to what we have entered else the distance measured will be inaccurate.
A Pedometer which can calculate the number of calories burned is beneficial since this will help us keep track of our progress as well as know if we have earned that extra doughnut. If there is an option to enter our weight make sure we enter it correctly as this will keep the calculations accurate.
Thus, it is important to know what type of program we will follow and then deciding which pedometer we should have. There are many different brands available for pedometers like Omron and Sportsline.
Just for information there is no Pedometer in the market that can be 100% accurate. Even the expensive and reputable models can only be close to the mark.
