Selecting appropriate furniture for the garden is as important as selecting furniture for the interiors of the house. The garden furniture must be such that it should be comfortable and must also add to the aesthetic beauty of the garden.

Factors to be considered before selecting the furniture:

About the garden:

The landscape, the type of trees and plants grown in the garden, lighting arrangements proposed are some of the factors to be weighed before selecting the furniture. In addition to this, the size of the garden, whether the garden is in the front side of the house or in the backyard is another factor to decide the type of furniture.

Type of furniture:

Garden furniture now available in the market is made of either wood or synthetic materials like plastic or steel. Whatever be the type of furniture, it is prone to reaction due to weather changes. Wooden furniture is fast to react to weather. Moreover, it is very difficult to maintain furniture that is kept in a garden. On the other hand, steel furniture is prone to corrode due to weather. The rate of corrosion would be more during winter and rainy season. Although steel furniture is given anti corrosion treatment, corrosion cannot be completely avoided. By anti corrosion treatment, the process of corrosion may be slowed down. The next alternative is to go for synthetic or plastic furniture. Although this is weather proof, the color of the furniture tends to fade in the course of time; particularly during the summer season. It is advisable that the furniture should be covered with cloth so that it looks elegant and it protects the furniture against change of weather, etc.

Selection of the furniture:

This is the most difficult process. Apart from what is mentioned above, the purpose for which the garden is generally made use of is the deciding factor for selection of furniture. Garden furniture includes dining set, hammock, side chairs, end table, etc. For example, if the garden is not big enough, then dining set may not be relevant. If it is a big garden and frequent dinner parties are held in the garden, then dining set will be more relevant. The dining set available with umbrella will be most appropriate because it protects against rain and sun. It also protects the food from dust, etc.

Cost:

This is yet another guiding factor in furnishing the garden. Garden furniture is available in various price ranges. It also depends on the type of furniture proposed to be purchased.
