AMEX's core group business concern has changed over the years from stocks to share options and Exchange-traded funds, even though it goes on to deal in small-scale to mid-size stocks. In the early to mid 90's the stock exchange was dogged by suggestions of dealer scandals, spotlighted in 1999 by BusinessWeek. The year earlier, the American Stock Exchange integrated with the National Assoc of Securities Dealers to produce the NASDAQ AMEX Market Group where AMEX is a set-apart entity of the N.A.S.D parent company. After disputes with the NASD and Amex members, the latter group bought N.A.S.D and assumed guardianship of the AMEX back in 2004.
