Around 1850 the area around Lake Windermere was gradually developing an increasingly important tourist trade, whose clients were wealthy and which although seasonal provided much needed income. There were many local entrepreneurs that naturally wanted to expand this trade and the development of the railway to Windermere gave them their chance.

The tourists then put a large demand on the area and there was then a need for more tourist facilities. The area still boasts magnificent houses from this time on Compston Road, Rothay Road and Church Street. St Mary's parish church was built after Sir George Gilbert Scott was commissioned for the job. This was finished in 1854 and its considerable size was an expression of the confidence felt at the time that prosperity was to continue to grow.

There are many Ambleside B&B's but one very special one is the Old Vicarage Bed and Breakfast, it is no ordinary Ambleside guest house. It is a family run business and the owners take great pride in the warm welcome and friendly atmosphere that they create at their Ambleside Bed and Breakfast.
As well as offering comfortable B&B accommodation, it is the only bed and breakfast Ambleside with its own swimming pool and hot tub, sauna, guest lounge and extensive terrace. This takes it beyond the standard Ambleside B&B's that are so often experienced.

The Old Vicarage Ambleside B&B is located only two minutes walk from Ambleside town centre which is wonderfully situated for trips to Keswick, Grasmere and Windermere. If the Lake District landscape is your passion, there is easy access from the front door of the B&B onto the Lakeland fells and with a little effort the tourist can enjoy the stunning views down Lake Windermere. It is also easy to walk to the pier for boat trips to Bowness-on-Windermere and Lakeside. If you fancy a drink or meal in the evening, simply walk from the bed and breakfast to an array of Lake District pubs and restaurants, all within easy reach.
