How to use the Srcoll and Status Bars on Microsoft Word 2000

Scroll Bars
There are two scroll bars: Vertical and horizontal. These allow you to move through a document - either horizontally or vertically - that is too long or wide to be displayed entirely in the window

  • Click the up scroll arrow to scroll up one line
  • Or Up Arrow key
  • Click the down scroll arrow to scroll down one line
  • Or the down arrow key
  • Click above the scroll box to scroll up one screen
  • Or Ctrl + Page-up keys
  • Click below the scroll box scroll down one screen
  • Or Ctrl + Page-sown keys
  • Click the left scroll arrow to scroll left
  • Or Left arrow key
  • Click the right scroll arrow to scroll right
  • Or Right Arrow key
  • Scroll left, beyond the margin, in normal view

Display or hide scroll bars

  • Click Tools menu
  • Or Alt + T keys
  • Click Options
  • Press O for options
  • Click the View tab.
  • Or Shift + Tab keys
  • Arrow to view
  • Under Show, select the Horizontal scroll bar and Vertical scroll bar check boxes
  • Or Tab key to show
  • Arrow key to Horizontal scroll bar
  • Spacebar to uncheck box
  • Arrow key to Vertical scroll bar
  • Spacebar to uncheck box
  • To make unhide them check the check boxes

Status Bar
The status bar, which is a horizontal area in Word below the document window, provides information about the current state of what you are viewing in the window and any other contextual information.

  • To display the status bar, Check the Status Bar check box in the Options Dialog Box
  • To Hide it Uncheck box

Page number
The page number is based on the logical numbering scheme, of the page shown in the window and first item from the left

Section number
The section number of the page shown in the window

Number/number
Based on the actual, or physical, page count in the document, the page number and the total number of pages.

At
Is the distance from the top of the page to your insertion point. No measurement is displayed if the insertion point is not in the window.

Ln
The line of text where the insertion point is located. No measurement is displayed if the insertion point is not in the window.


Col
Is the distance, in number of characters, from the left margin to the insertion point. No measurement is displayed if the insertion point is not in the window.

REC
Is the macro recorder status. Double-click REC to turn the macro recorder on or off. When the recorder is off, REC appears dimmed.

TRK
Is the track changes status. Double click TRK to turn the track changes feature on or off. When changes are not being tracked, TRK appears dimmed. To Automatically track Word documents in the Outlook Journal Start Microsoft Outlook. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Preferences tab. Under Contacts, click Journal Options. In the Also record files from box, select the Microsoft Word check box.
Note Documents that are automatically recorded in the Outlook Journal sometimes take a few minutes to appear in the Journal.

EXT
Is the extend selection mode status. Double-click EXT to turn the mode on or off. When selection mode is off, EXT appears dimmed.

OVR

Is the overtype mode status. Double-click OVR to turn the mode on or off. When overtype mode is off, OVR appears dimmed. To type over existing text

  • On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Edit tab. To replace existing text as you type, select the Overtype mode check box. For mouse uses to switch between Insert mode and Overtype mode, double-click OVR on the status bar.

WPH - The status of WordPerfect Help
Double-click WPH (and then click Options) to turn it on or off. When WordPerfect Help is off, WPH appears dimmed.

WPN - The status of WordPerfect Navigation
Double-click WPN (and then click Options) to turn it on or off. When WordPerfect Navigation is off, WPN appears dimmed.

The spelling and grammar checking status
When Word is in the process of checking for errors, an animated pen appears over the book. If no errors are found, a check mark appears. If an error is found, an "X" appears. To resolve the error, double-click this icon.

The background save status
When a pulsating disk icon appears, Word is saving your document in the background, as you work.

The background print status
When a printer icon appears, Word is printing your document in the background, as you work. A number next to the printer icon shows the current page number being printed. To cancel the print job, double-click the printer icon.

Clock (Windows NT 3.51) - The current time
When running under Windows NT 3.51, a clock appears in the status bar in Word. When running under Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0, the clock appears on the system's taskbar at the bottom of your screen.
