How to Use Borders and shading options on Microsoft Word 2000
Borders and Shading
This can be applied to a single paragraph or cell in a table or multiple paragraphs or cells in a table. Borders and shading option from the format menu is used regardless to what you are trying to border. There is also a borders toolbar, which you can use for most of the features for quick use. You can also change the colour of your border or add shading.
Applying borders
- Select the area you wish to apply a border either by highlighting the text that you require the border to go around or place the cursor where you want the border to go.
- Select borders and shading from the format menu
This dialog box has three control tabs Border, Page border and Shading
- Click on the Border control tab
- Or Alt + B
- Select the required setting by clicking on it
- Or Alt + X for box
- Alt + A for Shadow
- Alt + D for 3-D
- Alt + U for Custom
In the middle of the dialog box you have three combo boxes Style, colour and width of line
- Click in the appropriate box
- Or Alt + Y for Style
- Alt + C for colour
- Alt + W for width
- Use the arrow keys in each case to make your selects
- Press enter key
- On the right-hand side of the dialog box is the preview window and four small squares. The small squares are the custom setting tools.
- Clicking on the first square will produce a top line of a border
- Or tabbing to it and press enter
- Clicking on the second square will produce a bottom line of a border
- Or tabbing to it and press enter
- Clicking on the third square will produce a left line of a border
- Or tabbing to it and press enter
- Clicking on the fourth square will produce a right line of a border
- Or tabbing to it and press enter
- You have a choice of the distance from the text to the line of the border
- Click on the option button
- Or Alt + O
- A dialog box will appear with four small combo boxes with sizes for the distance between the text and the top, bottom, left and right lines of the border
- Click on them in turn
- Use the Up arrow key to increase the size
- Use the down Arrow key to decrease the size
- Or Alt + O for top line
- Alt + M for bottom line
- Alt + E for left
- Alt + F for right
- Use arrow keys to adjust size
There are two buttons at the bottom left corner Show toolbar and Horizontal Line
- Click on it to show toolbar button
- Or Alt + T
- Click on Horizontal Line button
- Or Alt + H
The Horizontal Line dialog box will appear giving you options of pictures or motion clips and these are selected the same way as picture and motion clips of bullets
- When you are satisfied click on the OK button.
- Or Tab to it and press enter
Applying Shading
- Click on the shading control tab
- Or tab to the shading control tab
- Click on the colour you require
- Or tab to filling
- Use arrow keys to choose colour
- When you are satisfied click on the OK button.
- Or Tab to Ok button and press enter
