Like any other business or even a vacation, an online business or an affiliate marketing business needs some planning! If you don't plan your moves, if you don't have an established strategy, you don't know where you're going and what you're doing! So planning is absolutely important!

First of all, start with an objective. Think of the cause that made you want to earn an income online. Family? Freedom? Think of how your online business will help you achieve that. Remember, an objective must have an attribute - for example sales, visitors, prospects, be measurable in units - could be dollars or number of sales or number of visitors, define a target - that would be your product, and measurable in time - specify a deadline to achieve your goal. Also, please have the objective be attainable and realistic - no excessively high expectations or dreams. It may discourage you on the way. An example of a precise objective would be: I want to generate 75 sales in one month (that will make me $3,500 a month), selling this affiliate tool to other affiliate marketers within the next 8 months. This way, you know when you have succeeded!

Next, determine how you're going to make that happen. You have to bring traffic to your affiliate site. Otherwise, you won't be making any sales! No visitors, no sales! There are different ways to bring traffic. I wouldn't suggest buying a traffic package because you never know the source of the traffic, not to mention the quality. So your action plan to bring traffic to your site would be: postings, blogging, twitting, articles writing, etc.

Before you start anything, do some R&D! Every marketing requires a target! Who do you want to target? Where will you find your target audience? What are the benefits of your product? Now do some research and gather different sources (forums, online classifieds, articles submission, etc.) of potential traffic. You don't want only one source of traffic!

Once you've determined a number of different categories of sources, establish a budget for each of them. Will you pay extra for premium ads? Will you have to pay a membership to get a higher status? Most of them are free but there are sometimes options to get more exposure. It's up to you to use those options or not. Pick the sources that fit in your budget.

One last thing. To encourage a certain discipline and consistency, you'll need to establish a calendar of activities. Depending on your availability and the amount of time you want to spend on your online business, determining what you will do exactly and when you will do it will save you time and money! In a given month, establish how many articles you want to publish and to which sources, how many posts you want to have to each forum, how many... This step consists of stating what activity you'll be doing and for how long. At the end of the day or week or month, you'll be able to measure your effort. If on Monday you have one hour to spend on your online business, use that hour efficiently to post 30 ads online or respond to 5 threads in 4 different forums. And maybe take 15 minutes every other day to update your blog. By establish such calendar, you'll know exactly what action to take and when to take it. No wandering around and goofing off on the internet! Concrete moves that will bring you closer to your objective!

You're almost ready to get started! Now what tools do you need? A website? A blog? You can have both for free at Weebly or Webs. Content matters a lot! If you put quality content, your product will sell easy. If you put the same thing that's on the sales page, well you might as well not have the website or the blog at all! Get creative! Think about your target audience! Once you have your website or your blog set up, you're ready to go! Get yourself and your product out there!

Now that you have a plan, you can track your progression. You'll know if you've been lazy or working as planned. You'll know which source is not bringing you any traffic and which ones are. You'll have a clear mind of what you're doing and why you're doing it. And when your first objective has been reached, set a new one! Keep it going for as long as you want! Now you're talking business! Enjoy your online success!
