Many entrepreneurs and self-employed professionals get caught up in their everyday tasks that they become slaves of their business... They lose sight of their goals and their vision. Instead of being a business owner and work on the business, they become an employee in their own company.

To avoid being trapped in this situation, here are some tips to help you focus on managing and growing your business rather than working in it.

As an entrepreneur, you must create and follow short/long-term goals for your business. Write them down and post them up where you can see them. It can also be a picture, a symbol, something simple that motivates you when things get rough, when you lose track of time or when you think "why am I doing all this?" Remind yourself of your goals. That should keep you going!

Don't get too comfortable with your income or your life until you've reached your ultimate long-term goal. You should always be making new goals for yourself and developing new sales ideas. The world keeps changing and you and your business should adapt to changes whether economically, socially, demographically or politically.

If you're doing everything on your own, you're like a one-man show. Look at your tasks. As an entrepreneur, you may want to be the decision maker and think about expanding your business, implementing new prospection techniques, bringing in more customers, etc. Outsource business' chores that you're less good at or that take much of your time and leave it to a talented professional.

For example, hire a sales representative to do the prospecting and the closing for you or an administrative assistant to do the filing and to organize your schedule. By outsourcing part of your workload, you save time and money and you can spend them on promoting and growing your business.

Stop procrastinating and start finishing all your business tasks. Make a list and do one task at a time. Don't get caught up thinking that you can never get them all done. When accomplishing a task, ask yourself the following question: "am I working on my business or am I doing work that I can delegate?" Remember, time and human efforts are limited. You should be running a business, not holding a job.

If your budget permits or if you want to improve more and get guidance, you may want to consider hiring a business coach. That could help increase your sales, motivate you, balance your workload, etc. Most if not all business coaches are successful entrepreneurs who share their expertise and knowledge to help other entrepreneurs succeed. Think of a gold medal champion athlete. He had a coach to train him and evaluate his performance to improve the qualities and correct the flaws. Your business coach will provide you with valuable advices and help you see clear.

In all of this, be careful not to become a workaholic. Your mind and your social and family life need you too! By giving your brain a rest, you'll work better and with a clearer head. Sometimes, the best ideas come out of nowhere! So enjoy life as well. Most business owners tend to work less and make more money!
