The Standard Toolbar
Located just below the 'menu bar' and contains the icons, which are the most frequently used of the Excel commands including the 'Office Assistant' - The question mark. This is Excel extensive help system that gives you immediate access to definitions, explanations, and useful tips. It provides this information using a question and answer format.
- F1 - Get Help
- Alt + number (Alt + 1 is the first topic, Alt + 2 is the second, and so on) - Select a Help topic from the list the Assistant displays
- Alt + Down Arrow - See more Help topics
- Alt + Up Arrow - See previous Help topics
- Esc - Close an Assistant message or a tip
Exercise - using Office Assistant
- Click on the Office Assistant icon and once it is displayed you would type your question.
- For this exercise type "FORMULAS" A drop down-menu will appear with a list of options.
- Select "Enter a formula to calculate values" - simply point the mouse at it and click
- Select "Enter a Formula"
- Help will then tell you how to do it.

- For this exercise type "FORMULAS" (A drop down-menu will appear with a list of options)
- Tab to select "Enter a formula to calculate values" ( if you had required one of the other options you would have used the down arrow to select it at this stage)
- Press Alt + S - for search and you will see another drop-down menu with further options.
- Tab twice to select first option - Enter a formula.
Note at this stage: Tab will take you to other options
- Shift + Tab will take you to the previous option
- Alt + A will take you to the Answer Wizard
- Alt + C will take you to the Contents
- Alt + I will take you to the index
- Press Enter and help will show you what to do.
- Click the print icon
- Or press CRTL + P to print the selected option
Note: When using the answer wizard
- Alt + W will take you to the box to type in your question
- Alt + T will take you to pane to select the displayed options
- F6 to go to the next windowpane
- Tab to select option
- Alt + left arrow key will take you back to the last screen you viewed
- Alt + right arrow key will take you forward a screen (can only be used if you have gone back a screen)
