The clock is about the oldest known invention from humans. Clocks consistently measure time and do so in units shorter than natural units. A natural unit of time would be a day, week, month or year. But the need for a smaller measure of time produced the clock. These clocks now come in just about any form, size or shape including the ever popular wall clocks.
During the thirteenth century, a clock was invented that was mechanical. This created the method of continuous process to keep time. The wall clocks works by oscillation. This process has repeating parts that repeat a single motion that helps to keep a constant time between reps. This oscillator is connected to controller devices that help to replace lost energy over time.
Whether electrical, battery operated or mechanical, clocks are simply amazing in their function. Mechanical clocks are run by a rope and pulley system where one rope is weighted and attached to a pulley. Clocks are required to constantly run to keep an accurate time, so many have a back up power source in case the main power happens to be lost. This is what enables your alarm clock to go off even though your power has gone out.
The clock face is the front of the clock that tells you the time. The most common for wall clocks is the twelve hour scale. While many countries have tried other time intervals like the six, either, ten and the twenty-four hour face, the most common that we all know is the twelve. Time on this clock can be broken down into minutes and even seconds. While the twelve hour clock is the most common, the twenty-four hour is also used. Mostly this one is used for military time.
While different clocks can serve different purposes, the wall clocks purpose is to mainly tell time. These clocks are usually found within a home, a business or other various places. People even wear a small version on their wrists known as a watch. Much larger scale clocks can be seen on the outside of buildings and churches, even train stations. The digital devices like phones that we carry all have clocks in them as well.
Whereas wall clocks are used mainly to indicate time, other clocks have other functions. Mostly they are device controllers such as for an alarm, a VCR or even a time bomb. Our computers also have internal clocks that keep things functioning when the computer is closed or off.
The first wall clocks were used in schools, factories and churches. They were produced in Connecticut. The most commonly used was the regulator for its dependability. It would keep exact time down to the split second. It is the reason many jewelry stores kept one in the window where people walking by could adjust their personal time pieces. Trains also made it a practice to use the regulator to keep their trains on schedule.
Undoubtedly the most popular wall clock is the cuckoo. These wall clocks are typically hand made of carved wood pieces and hand painted as well. Some of the most beautiful artwork comes from Germany and feature animals as well as people in all sorts of activities.
