Here's a little exercise to see what you have learnt from previous articles or simply to test your knowledge of Microsoft Excel 2000
Open new worksheet
Type in
- Cell A1 Block Trading Company
- Cell A3 Weekly Figures
- Cell B4 Week 1
- Cell C4 Week 2
- Cell D4 Week 3
- Cell E4 Week 4
- Cell F4 Total
- Cell A5 Sales
- Cell B5 2559
- Cell C5 2496
- Cell D5 1651
- Cell E5 2542
- Cell A6 Expenses
- Cell B6 1098
- Cell C6 1436
- Cell D6 1354
- Cell E6 1231
- Cell A7 Gross Profit
- Cell A8 VAT
- Cell A9 Net Profit
- Save worksheet as - Your name 2
Before doing the calculations we check to see if the figures are right and we discover that cell B5 should read 2556. We need to edit the cell. You can of course change the contents of any cell at any time.
To edit the contents of a cell
- You select the cell you want to edit - in this case - B5 then click on the formula bar and change the 9 for a 6.
- Arrow key to the require cell, tap the spacebar and type in the correct data
Note: You can check left side of the status bar to see if you are in edit mode
To Total
- Click on F5
- Click on AutoSum icon Make sure that the right formula is printed on the formula bar (=SUM(B5:E5)
- Click the formula enter icon - The tick - or press the enter key on the keyboard.
- Or in cell F5 type (=SUM(B5:E5) and press the enter key
To calculate the Gross profit
- In cell B7 type =
- Click in cell B5 and type -
- Click in cell B6.
- Press the 'enter key' on the keyboard or click on tick on the formula bar.
- Or Type =Sum(B5:B6) and press the enter key
To calculate the VAT
- In cell B8 type =
- Click on cell B7 and type *17.5%
- Press the 'enter key' on the keyboard or click on tick on the formula bar.
- Or In cell B8 Type =
- Arrow key to B7 and tap spacebar Type * then 17.5%
- Press 'enter key' on keyboard
To calculate net profit
- Click on cell B9 and type =
- Click on B7 then type -
- Click on B8
- Press the 'enter key' on the keyboard or click on tick on the formula bar.
- Or In cell B9 Type =Sum(B7:B8)
- Press the enter key
Note: 17.5% is the UK rate.
