MRI - "magnetic resonance imaging"- is a noninvasive medical procedure that helps the physicians to diagnose and treat medical impairments. MRI uses powerful magnetic field, radio frequency pulses and a computer to produce detailed pictures of the organs, soft tissues and other body parts. The imaging allows the physicians to evaluate certain parts of the body and detect diseases and internal impairments that may not be efficiently accessed by other imaging tactics like the X-rays, ultrasound and tomography.

MRI is performed to evaluate the organs of chest and abdomen like heart, lungs, pancreas, kidneys liver; pelvic parts including the reproductive organs and blood vessels. MR imaging is performed to detect certain problems in heart and blockages in blood vessels, cysts and tumors in chest, abdomen and pelvis.

MRI depends on the particular body type and the guidelines may vary from each person. Generally it is asked to have a fast of few hours before the MR imaging. The patients are instructed to take off metal ornaments or other things that they have worn over their body. Even the clothes that have metal attachments are required to remove so that these metal objects don't interfere with the images. The patients who have undergone some surgery in the past have to inform the physician about that as he has to evaluate the complications involved with the MR Imaging and recommend the alternative way out. Generally the patients who have got the artificial heart valves, pacemakers, artificial limbs and metallic joint prostheses, implanted nerve stimulators, tooth implants are required to inform their physicians about their surgical operations so that the physician can find a way to obtain the best images without distortion.

While the MRI is in progress the patient has to remain stills to avoid blur in imaging. The physician may also give you sedative drug. Sometimes a contrast material is injected into the blood stream. This is done to figure out the blockages in the blood stream and other problems related to blood supply. The colors patterns in the images gives an idea of blood flow in a particular part of body and any problem in that part can be cured. Generally this process is painless but some times patients may find it difficult remain still and some may also suffer from claustrophobia.

The risk factor involved with MRI is very low if proper guidelines are followed. It may cause some problems in patients who have got electronic devices in their body. Some allergic reactions are supposed to happen as a result of contrast material if the amount injected is not controlled. Leaving such few things apart, MRI is a very reliable and useful tool that could be used to image the body parts and tissues and detect the problems in the body in the sleekest manner. This helps the physician to get in to the root causes of the problem and treat it in most appropriate manner.
