Golfing apparel is just as essential to a good golf game as a great set of clubs, not only because if you look good, you’ll feel good and play well but for more practical reasons.

Let’s start with the simplest item of golfing apparel, the hat. A hat may not seem a very important item but it has multiple uses. First of all, it will shade your scalp and face from the harsh rays of the sun. It’s a regrettable fact that many male senior golfers are likely to have thinning or receding hair and avoiding sunburn is a must. Ladies will want to keep their skin as wrinkle free as possible. In addition the hat will help to reduce the heating effect of the sun and consequent perspiration. Perhaps more importantly, it will shade the eyes from the sun helping to make that perfect shot!

So, the number one piece of golfing apparel to raise your confidence and keep you on top of your game is a hat.

Working our way down the body, we need a shirt or blouse; something like a polo shirt is a great idea as many golf clubs don’t allow collarless shirts. Polo shirts are usually made of knitted cotton and are stretchy so they fit well but they have plenty of “give” so that they won’t feel tight across the shoulders when you’re in the middle of your swing. These are suitable for both men and women and come in a huge variety of colours.

Now we’ll move to the trousers. Comfort is really the number one thing here, so maybe an elasticated waistband might be right for you. In any event, don’t choose anything which is too tight and restricts movement. In terms of length, that will depend on which golf course you use. Many clubs don’t allow shorts or only on certain days, at certain times; some will allow three-quarter length trousers and others insist on full-length. You may be relieved to know that loud checked trousers are no longer compulsory on the golf course!

Socks are more important than you might imagine; they should be cotton, not too tight and above all comfortable and right for your shoes. Socks play a major part in controlling body heat and preventing blisters, so make sure that they’re right.

In many countries, rainwear is essential. Choose something lightweight as on a good day, you may have to carry it. Jackets and trousers with a lining which repels moisture and breathes to ensure you'll stay dry, both from rain and from perspiration are the best sort. Rain jackets and trousers specifically designed for golf won’t interfere with your stance or your swing.

The correct golfing apparel is essential to keep you on top of your game in comfort.
