Rakhi 2010 is as special as the other Indian festivals, as it is the auspicious day that commemorates the brother-sister bond. The much awaited Rakhi festival is looked forward to, by the entire nation. Hence Raksha bhandan has evolved as one of the most popular and revered Indian festivals.

Rakhi History:
The time honored Hindu scriptures and mythology are good sources of all the Hindu rituals and festivals. Rakhi history is an interesting one as it brings to life the importance of the Gods we so revere. The Rakhi history is rooted in the Hindu mythology. Centuries ago, in the Vedic period, the deities and demons were fighting a battle against each other. The demons were in a stronger position, as compared to the deities. The king of the deities, Lord Indra, was apprehensive about the results while his wife Indrani prepared a talisman with her religious power and tied it around Indra's right wrist. Eventually the deities won the battle and Lord Indra escaped unhurt. Lord Indra then advanced against the Daitya-raaja, vanquished him and reestablished his sovereignty. There are several other stories pertaining to Rakhi history, of the Rajputana dynasty, and that of Alexannder and Porus. The blessed thread has acted as protector and even to this day it is revered as the Rakhi-a holy thread of love.

When is Rakhi?
The Indian calendar is based on the planetary constellations and all important days like Rakhi 2010 will be decided based on that. The rakhi festival is celebrated on Shravan Purnima (full moon day), which falls in the months of July-August in the English calendar. Since the day is celebrated based on the Indian calendar, which changes every year, Rakhi festival also falls on the different dates of the English calendar.

Originally celebrated on a full moon day, Rakhi festival is truly one of the most awaited festivals of all time. Since Rakhi 2010 will be celebrated on a poornima or full moon day, it is also known by other names like Nariyal Purnima in parts of Goa, Kajari Purnima and Pavitropana in other parts of the country.

Rakhi 2010 will be celebrated with much aplomb on August 24, 2010. The Rakhi festival will witness unsurpassed enthusiasm. The customs may vary from region to region keeping the core essence of the festival intact. Raksha bandhan is one of those rare Indian celebrations which liven up the spirit of celebration even amongst the non residing Indians. The Indian Diaspora has great respect for the Rakhi festival and observes the Raksha bhandan rituals with much enthusiasm.
