Working at home has its own set of challenges. These challenges are different from working outside the home. When you work outside the home your schedule is pretty much set and you have a routine at the office or place of work. When you work from home, there are many interruptions to your schedule, and many temptations to avoid. The neighbor may stop by to chat, or bring you some goodies. Maybe, something is going on around the neighborhood, your friend calls, you have a sales person knocking at your door, your pet wants to play, and many other demands, especially if you also care for small children, or home school your kids. Other easy distractions are the television, the refrigerator, and the phone. In order to be productive in your home business you must learn to deal with these issues effectively. By making time to do your business and follow a schedule well planned, you will soon become more productive and reduce stress.
If you are working from home full time, or just to make some extra income, the rules of productivity are the same. It boils down to planning and scheduling your activities throughout the day, and allowing a small block of time for any mishaps or miscellaneous activities. Spend time at the end of your workday – or in the evenings to plan the schedule for the next day. If events have to be logged in advance, do so. Keep a monthly view in your computer or written planner so you can better see the events that are coming and avoid conflicting schedules.
Watch your phone calls, if you have to call a relative or friend, can it wait for after business hours? If it cannot, then monitor the time you spend on the call so you do not end up chatting for an hour. In addition, any trips that you have to make to run errands route efficiently and take care of as much as you can. Keep track of business miles separately.
Learn to schedule home chores also. If the nature of your business requires you to be available at odd hours (not on a 9-5 schedule) and at different times throughout the day, then learn to work on chores in time slots. For example, you can put laundry, leave it washing, and prepare a report. The key is not to try to do all the chores at once but spread them out in small increments throughout the day and week. Handle all correspondence the same day if possible; for home bills and other paperwork, try to set 15 minutes, half hour daily, or every other day to do so.
If your home business starts growing and you need extra time, see if you can come up with more time by eliminating some daily chores or activities that you do not benefit directly from such as the two hours of watching television. If not, see if you can hire an extra set of hands to help you, either with home chores or with business work. First, analyze your schedule for any time that is not being utilized productively.
By organizing your workspace and supplies, you will save time that is wasted in looking for stuff. Organization and planning are key to managing a successful business from home. In addition, it is important that you schedule one day off a week or at least some time off for yourself, your personal hobbies and interests, and to spend with family and friends. Just because you are working from home does not mean that you cannot be burned or stressed out. You need rest, fun, and socialization.
